Raise your hand if your nightstand, bathroom counter, or desk is full of little bits and things that have no home.
Hand not raised? Liaaaar! (Read in the tone of Miracle Max’s wife from The Princess Bride. Haven’t seen it? Stop reading and go watch! I’ll be here when you get back.)
Good, you’re back! So this week I’ve been playing with little ring and trinket dishes. There’s really no difference between them except my little daisy dishes are better suited to rings and the larger square ones hold more ‘stuff’. Right now, the latest experiment is holding a stack of my very favorite copper twist bangles.
Polymer clay is great for little dishes that might get bopped off the counter or table. Well cured polymer clay keeps a little bit of flex so it’s not brittle or especially fragile. Yes, stomp on it and it will break. Drop it 20 times on concrete, it will likely live.
Exhibit A: The daisy test ring dish. After testing.
The next time I test for breakage, I’ll recruit another pair of hands for a video. So, what did I put this poor little unfinished daisy dish through exactly? Well, klutzy folks like me tend to knock things on the floor. It’s a given. I drop things, I trip over things, frankly, I should be living in a bubble. So, outside me and little blue daisy went.
For the record, the petals are each only a few millimeters thick. I took the poor, innocent, unsuspecting ring dish to the pavers at the bottom of my back steps and proceeded to drop it. Repeatedly. Bottom down, top down, knocked off the porch rail, thrown into the air, and even a brief tour of the yard from my dog’s mouth. That last one was unintentional, I swear.
Did you know polymer clay bounces instead of shatters like glass or ceramics would? Well, that sucker bounced right into the grass where Bella walked right up and carried it off.
So, after all the bouncing, dropping, and banging, the damage was 2 petals broken off and one petal cracked. We’re talking 20 or more drops, knocks, and tosses on concrete pavers. Not too shabby! Do keep away from dogs (or cats) that are not as polite as mine but otherwise these little bowls will stand up to a lot of abuse.
The above ring dish in black and shades of red turned out a little quirky. Perfect for my night stand! I’ll get more made up in whatever colors my little heart desires (or yours, I’m always happy to take custom orders).
Until next time, friends.
